Blue screen after installation on Win XP
Posted: Tuesday, July 19, 2005 11:02 PM (GST)

We are trying to get started with Reporting Services but are having a problem with always getting a blue screen in XP after installation. I'd like to know if others have experienced this, or have an idea of what the problem is.

This is the process I follow:

    Reformat the hard disk
    Install Win XP Pro
    Install .Net framework
    Install IIS
    Register ASP.NET
    Install SQL2000 SP3a
    Reboot
Install Reporting Services (any combination of service packs or no service packs)

Reporting Services will now appear to work correctly. The sample reports can be viewed and used.

BUT when rebooting, a blue screen error will invariably appear before the login prompt, making the machine unusable:

    "STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error}
The Windows Logon Process system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of 0xc0000139 (0x00000000 0x0000000) The system has been shutdown."

Sometimes the machine freezes, forcing the reboot. This has happened consistently every time we have tried (about six or seven times) and on different machines of different makes.

    Thanks
    Sel

May seem like a silly question but it was encountered at my company installing reporting services on a couple of machines. You are installing standard or developer edition only with XP correct? Enterprise edition does not work with XP. The only other issue that was encountered in our set up was the .Net installation. A few machines had .Net errors and so everything past that did not work correctly and we had to uninstall and reinstall .Net and everything after...

Not sure how much that will help you. I wish I had more for you, I know how hard troubleshooting an installation can be! Good luck to you!!!

Turned out that the problem was caused by the installer overwriting msvcrt.dll in System32, causing the crash.

This mscvrt.dll replacement, is the one and only solution to the blue screen c000021a fatal system error 0xc0000139 on windows xp. In my case the 2007 dated version was replaced by a 1999 one.

I got the same error after installing an external drive software and restarting my lap top.  This may seem like a basic question, but how do you replace the mscvrt.dll file?
