remote connection of the sql reports in express edition
Posted: Wednesday, April 04, 2007 12:47 AM (GST)

    Hello Dear Friends

I work for a small organization and on my reference my team downloaded the express edition of  web developer 2005 and Sql server 2005

WE have worked on two products

And now i understand that "Report data sources must be SQL Server relational databases that run locally in SQL Server Express" !!!!!!!!

We are able to connect sqlserver database

The work on products is almost complete and at this point cannot revert back to any other reporting services.

DO I HAVE HOPE....is there any way to connect to ssrs 2005 remotely ? Please help

Our Client has branches at two locations so the database will be on the server and he would want to acess reports at both places

Please  help me as to what should i do now???

    Sara

Ah, report data can be drawn from any data source that can be exposed by an OLE DB, ODBC or .NET Data Provider--not just SQL Server. Ok, let's assume that the data is on a local SQL Server Express database. Yes, this data can be exposed to a LAN or even a WAN assuming you first open the ports and protocols to do so. Use the SQL Server Surface Area Configuration tool to do this.  And yes, you can connect to SQL Server Reporting Services remotely if that's really necessary. We're not that thrilled with exposing SSRS over a public Web network though. There are a varierty of architectural choices from which to choose as described in the book and in my new book that includes a discussion of the ReportViewer control (that runs on a Windows Forms or ASP application).

    Hi Billva

Heartfelt thanks for the reply and your time. Your answer has really given me hope. I had  started to go into depression.

Is it possible to give me a little more handholding please.

currently i have more than 30 reports which we have designed as .rdl using BIDS

The client has office in very 2 different locations which are not connected by LAN or WAN, but he would need to see the same set of reports from the same location

Can you please tell me what exactly should i  do now ?? like which are the ports i need to open

Once again heartfelt thanks for your time and consideration.

    Hi Billva

I had referred this article  before posting the question

    http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms365166(d=printer).aspx

    it says

    Unsupported features:-

Remote data sources are not supported. Reports that are hosted in a SQL Server Express report server must retrieve SQL Server relational data from a local SQL Server Express Database Engine instance.

so i understood this as that the  reports can be only viewed in a computer if  the actual sqlserver express database is present in the same computer

so it made me think it is impossible to share the reports with N number of people who will be accessing the it from different location

just wanted to mention this bit of info

    Thank you

    Sara
